Scrooge

1951 British version of A Christmas Carol.

Starring Alistair Sim as Scrooge, with Mervyn Johns as Bob Crachit.

Its a whole: look it’s them! of British character actors of the period, including Miles Malleson, Kathleen Harrison and Hermione Baddeley.

It also features George Cole as a young Scrooge in a rather well considered opening out of Scrooge’s youth, featuring Jack ‘Evening all’ Warner as a bad influence, which does a lot of work to help explain how Scrooge’s redemption can happen in just one night.

We’re going to the 12:20 pm showing at the BFI Southbank

The Christmas Carol Walk

The walk will go round quite a small bit of the City of London following the events of the story from spot to spot.

We’ll start at the Royal Exchange at 3:00pm.

From there we’ll visit Scrooge’s office, the tavern where he has dinner and go back to his house for some haunting.

Then, with the ghosts, we’ll visit his past in a warehouse, Christmas present in Leadenhall Market and the future in a lost City graveyard.

Finally its off to Smithfield to buy a goose, as big as that boy down there.

The Crown Tavern

The walk shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours.

We’ve booked a table for 6:00 pm at the Crown Tavern, 43 Clerkenwell Green, but obviously we can (and probably will) arrive early.

They do standard pub food, but it’s not like there’s a lack of places to eat round Clerkenwell.

Anyway, they usually put on a pretty brave show for Christmas, so hopefully it’ll be an appropriately seasonal finish.

god bless us, everyone
